About

I am a cultural and intellectual historian, specializing in the history of Central and East European Jewry in the modern period. Most of my research and writing is centered on the various Jewish communities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

My work has dealt with a variety of subjects, including the history of Jewish nationalism and Zionism, the history of Orthodoxy, Jews and urban culture in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, material culture and architecture.

My first book "Nathan Birnbaum and Jewish Modernity: Architect of Zionism, Yiddishism and Orthodoxy," an intellectual biography of Viennese journalist and political theorist Nathan Birnbaum, will appear in 2012 with Stanford University Press.

I have published articles in journals including Jewish History and the AJS Review as well as several edited collections and volumes.

Currently I am on leave in Jerusalem as a Yad-Hanadiv/Beracha Fellow for the 2010-2011 academic year. In addition to my current position at Yeshiva University in New York, I have been a Visiting Fellow at Stanford University and the Hazel D. Cole Fellow at the University of Washington.

In addition to my teaching and research, I am excited to be the associate director of Yeshiva University's Center for Israel Studies, and am pursuing several projects under its auspices.
